What is endodontics

Endodontics is a treatment that consists of removing the dental pulp (inner tissue of the tooth) of infected or decayed teeth to then clean and seal the inside of the tooth. to then clean and seal the inside of the tooth. and thus avoid having to replace teeth with dentures and dental implants.

A mature tooth can survive without pulp and nerve, so extracting them will not affect their daily functioning.

In our dental clinic in Barcelona we always try to keep all your pieces so we have a team of specialists in endodontics that will take care of your teeth from the first minute.

The most common causes of damage to the pulp or nerve of the tooth are infections or inflammation of the pulp caused, in most cases, by decay not treated in time, trauma or fractures and wear of the teeth: caused in most cases by bruxism.

It should be taken into account that, when we have a cavity, a root canal can be avoided in the great majority of cases with a filling. If the caries is not treated in time, the infection advances inside the canals and can emerge around the root apices, the tips of the roots, and affect the bone that surrounds them.

In this case, a granulomatous lesion begins to form due to chronic irritation in the bone surrounding the root outlet, which may eventually lead to the formation of a periodontal cyst.

Some of the most common symptoms that may suggest the need for a root canal are:

  • Tooth pain or infected teeth
  • Tooth blackening
  • Prolonged sensitivity to heat or cold
  • Tooth sensitivity to chewing and touch
  • Inflammation of the gums and discoloration

What are the benefits of endodontics?

Endodontics is a treatment that allows to cure or heal an original tooth that has an infection or decay. The treatment is carried out quickly and with little pain, and has multiple short and long term advantages for the patient who decides to undergo one.

5 Advantages of endontics

  • Avoid the extraction of the natural tooth. Endodontic treatment can save and repair severely decayed or infected teeth, allowing the patient to keep their original tooth.
  • You regain chewing ability.Damaged teeth can be sensitive when exposed to hot or cold foods and also to the touch or chewing of certain foods. Endodontic treatment allows you to eat normally again when the tooth is fully recovered.

  • Prevents more expensive dental treatments. Endodontic treatment that restores the health of a tooth can also prevent the need for more expensive treatments such as orthodontics or dental implants in the future.
  • Avoid bad breath and other problems Infected teeth can cause problems beyond damage to the tooth itself, such as halitosis. Recovering an infected tooth is not only beneficial for that tooth, but for the health of the mouth as a whole.

  • It is a painless treatment. Endodontics is a treatment that hardly causes pain to the patient during the process. Current technology makes it a painless, fast and safe treatment.

How endodontics is performed

The first step of an endodontic treatment is to perform an X-ray that will help to assess the possible involvement of the pulp or nerve of the tooth. This x-ray allows the dentist to make a diagnosis, who will decide what treatment is appropriate.

Endodontics is an almost painless treatment, it is performed under local anesthesia to avoid any kind of discomfort during and after the intervention.

After anesthesia, we extract the affected dental pulp with a small perforation of the tooth. We clean the hole well to avoid further infections. Finally, a special sealing paste and gutta-percha, a rubber compound, is placed in the root canal of the tooth.

After a root canal the teeth can be very weakened, so we finish the restoration of the tooth by placing a prosthetic crown of noble metal or porcelain built on a metal-free ceramic base to protect the tooth and restore it completely. Both for its masticatory and esthetic functions.
